Changing surname of child |

|
Question:
I have been divorced from my wife for sometime. It has come to my attention that she is applying to the courts in this country to change our daughters surname from my name (x) to her own father's name (y). Is this allowed in Islam?
Answer:
Whether she can change the name, which according to the tradition of surname in this country will denote that her father is y not x.?
The answer is, in Islam; genealogical identity has been given extreme importance. Allah said in the Quran, "Proclaim their (children's) real parentage." 33:5 (Pickthall's translation). Our Prophet Muhammed (pbuh) said "whoever intentionally related himself/herself to someone else instead of their father, Paradise is prohibited for him" Bukhari and Muslim.
In the light of Quranic & Prophetic injunctions, the Muslim scholars have been unanimous in their decision that genealogy goes by father, and to them it is a great sin to relate the child to someone other than the father. So it is unlawful for the divorced wife to relate the children to her parent's family.
