Meat slaughtered by non-Muslims in western countries is permissible to eat? PDF Print E-mail
Question:
It is said that Muslims can eat the meat, which is slaughtered by Jews and Christians because they are people of the book. Majority of the people in the west are Christian, but with the concept of a multi-religious society, anyone could do the slaughtering, whether Atheists, Hindu, or Buddhists. Therefore, can we still consider that the meat slaughtered by non-Muslims in western countries is permissible to eat?

Answer:
A Qur'anic injunction of the slaughtered meat is confined to that of Muslims and the people of the book i.e. the Jews and the Christians, why is the slaughtered meat of these three groups is allowed? Is it because the way the slaughtering has been explained to all of them in the Taurat (believed by Jews and Christians) and the Qur'an (believed by Muslims)? That is not the case with the other religious groups, as mentioned above.

The conditions for Halal Zabiha are the following four:
A. The person who is slaughtering should be a Muslim, Jew or Christian
B. The name of Allah is mentioned at the time of slaughtering
C. For slaughtering a sharp knife should be used
D. The slaughtering should be done in the throat cutting at least three veins

Also these three conditions are normally met:
1. The name of Allah is mentioned at the time of slaughtering, this type of meat is allowed without any disagreement amongst the jurists.
2. Where the name of other than Allah is mentioned at the time of slaughtering this type of meat is forbidden without any disagreement amongst the jurists.
3.Where the name of Allah (SWT) is not mentioned at all, there is a disagreement amongst the jurists. The majority say that this type of meat is allowed because a Muslim or Kitabi person is always conscious about God whether he names him or not. On the other hand according to the second condition and Allah Almighty said, 'And don't eat that (meat) on which the name of Allah is not mentioned.' In my opinion, the slaughtered meat by the Christians in particular is totally commercialised and has no regard for naming Allah at all, thus this type of commercialised meat is forbidden, only Halal or Kosher meat will be allowed.
