RE Putting down Sick Dog Print E-mail
Question: Please could you help me with the following question. 15 years ago, when I was an unbeliever, my mum bought me a pet dog. Now that dog is sick and can hardly walk. Sometimes he stays over with me and rests on an old duvet in my garage. I am still kind to him as I care a lot for him, however I now know that dogs are only allowed as guards etc.

Sometimes he whimpers in pain. he has painkillers from the vet, but my mum talks of having him put down. Is it permissible to have a sick animal put down by the vet?

Answer: To be kind to the animals is in accordance with Islamic teachings. Better gift this dog to any dog- carer agency who would take the responsibility to put him down.
