Ruling regarding the dramatisation of the Prophets (peace be upon them) |
What is the ruling regarding the dramatisation of the Prophets (peace be upon them), the Companions and Successors (may Allah be pleased with them)?
In general, performances in plays are not devoid of elements of frivolity, exaggeration and contrived movements etc. These tend to distract the audience and absorb them completely, for the purpose of which the actor may twist, distort and make additions to the original speech of the one he is representing. This is not a good thing in itself let along if it is the Prophets, their companions or their successors who are being dramatized and they are being depicted conveying their message or worshipping or fighting for the cause of Islam.
Secondly, those who are in the business of dramatization may not be careful about seeking the truth and not have high Islamic morals. Some will exceed all limits and stoop to any level so long as they can attract more audiences, generate more income and gain the acclamation of the people. Thus they are led, when dramatizing the companions and others to make fun, mock, disgrace and belittle them, undermining the dignified position and respect in which Muslims hold them.
Though this ruling regards dramatization of the Prophets and their Companions in plays and films it also applies to picturing them in animated form. In fact this is even more abhorrent since drawing portraits in general is prohibited in Islam. No distinction is made between the companions with regards to this ruling whether they are close friends of the Prophet (SAWS) like the four Caliphs (RA) or others like Zayd by Thabit (RA) and Bilal bin Rabah (RA). As the cartoon film called 'Animated film on the life of Muhammad (SAWS)' is not devoid of the objections in the above fatawa; therefore it is not suitable to be released to the public.
