Changing name of woman after marriage |
|
|
|
Question:
Is it haram for a girl to change her surname after marriage? If so, what is the reason for it? If it is not permissible to change her surname which surname does she keep and will that cause complications in dealing with paper work in this country, for example dealing with bank accounts, or when buying a house?
Answer:
Assalam o alaikum!
The Islamic practice is not to change the surname, especially if it is her father name. Our prophet's daughter was always known as Fatima bint Muhammad not as Fatima Ali.
Similarly the wife of the prophet, Aisha is always known as Aisha bint Abu Bakar, not as Aisha Mohammad.
Wassalam.
