Question:
I have two questions regarding the rights and responsiblities of the wife towards her husbands parents:

1. What Islamically are responsibilities of the wife towards the husbands parents, as there seems to be a lot of confusion between cultural expectations and Islamic requirements? Is it correct that the husbands parents to not have the same rights and responsiblities over the daughter in law as her own parents do?

2. If the wife feels unable to live with the husbands parents (in this instance the husbands parents are financially and physically able to live without their son and daughter in law) and the husband is unwilling i.e. cannot be bothered to take on the hassle of having to worry about paying bills and unable i.e. not earning enough to cover bills without claiming state benefits for which his circumstances make him eleigible and so will not provide seperate accomodation, is that grounds for a divorce?

Answer:

Assalam o alaikum,
The Joint Family system in Asian Culture is the main reason behind all such problems as given by you. You are quite right to ask your husband to provide you a free-from-stress dwelling. But on the other hand---your husband got some obligations towards his mother as well. It is quite expected from you to create a balance between his two obligations. (Towards both of you)

In short, your main obligations are towards your husband only -- not to his parents. He is supposed to provide you housing and maintenance. As for bills, though it is his duty but if you are working woman, you can assist him by paying whatever you can, just to save your marriage. Anyhow, it is not a valid reason to ask for Talaq, until you think that life has become a hell because of his behavior.

Wassalam.
