[PRESS RELEASE] MP Sadiq Khan Recent Statement Print E-mail

The inspiring news of a Muslim, Sadiq Khan, as Gordon Brown’s race relation minister has been somewhat overcast by his imprudent and ignorant remarks regarding the role of the Sharia courts, which are more appropriately known as the Sharia councils. In response to Sadiq Khan’s comments, it is only befitting to highlight the great work carried out by the Sharia council and restore its reputation.

The existence of Sharia councils have fortunately gained recognition and been brought to public light over recent times albeit more often via what appears to be ill thought out publicity stunts intended to cause controversy.

However as the saying goes all publicity is good publicity and not to overlook an opportunity, the Sharia council are proud to highlight the tremendous work it has amassed over the years and in contradiction with Sadiq Khan’s ‘thinking’ the Sharia council in fact has a majority female beneficiary composition, with rulings often given in the favour of the female.

The presupposition of Sadiq Khan is that of a linear thought where as, if one was to actually look at the work of the Sharia council they would realise that it holds a vital and parallel role in the Muslim community, through arbitration between couples both in marital and financial matters including the way inheritance is distributed. Furthermore, hundreds of inquiries on Islamic issues are answered on daily basis through e-mail while the website of Islamic Sharia Council has an immense wealth of guidance for the Muslim community.

A great worry and sense of unease is if Sharia councils are denied the authority to develop in their own right, then there is the real danger that as Sadiq Khan says “women can be abused and persuaded to do things that they shouldn’t have to do”, will occur.

Also appreciating some of the concerns raised by Sadiq Khan regarding the infrastructure and support provided to Muslim women through the Sharia councils, we welcome him to visit and view an example of good practice accessed by Muslims across the UK.

Dr. Suhaib Hassan
Secretary
The Islamic Sharia council
