Wudu is required for what actions Print E-mail
Question: What are the different types of actions for which wudu becomes necessary?

Answer: Wudu is required for three actions;

1: Prayer; whether obligatory or optional and even funeral prayer due to the saying of Allah;

"O you who believe! when you intend to standup for prayer then wash your faces and your hands upto the elbows and wipe over your heads and (wash) your feet upto the ankels" [Surah Al-Maidah Verse 6]

Narrated by Abu Hurairah, the messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said:

"Allah will not accept the prayer of one of you until he makes ablution" [Agreed upon]

And reported by Abdullah ibn Omar from the Prophet of Allah (peace be upon him);

"Allah will not accept a prayer without [being in the state of] purity nor charity out of extravagence" [Muslim]

And reported by Ali, the messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said;

"The opening of prayer is purification and its tahreem is takbeer and its tahleel is tasleem" [Abu Dawud & Tirmidhi]

2: Tawaf around Ka`bah: based upon the tradition of Prophet of Allah (peace be upon him);

"Making tawaf around ka`bah is prayer" [Nisa`i, Tirmidhi & Ibn Khuzayma]

And also due to the saying of Prophet of Allah (peace be upon him) to Aisha when she was performing Hajj and she came on her menses;

"Do whatever the people of Hajj are doing except that you should not make Tawaf until become pure" [agreed upon]

3: Touching the Quran: Based upon the tradition transmitted by Amr bin Hazm and Hakeem bin Hazm & bin Omar;

"Do not touch the Quran except for being in a state of purity" [Reported by Maalik in Muwatta]
