how should one respond to Iqamah Print E-mail
Question: Does one has to repeat the Iqamah?

Answer: When the iqamah for the prayer has been made, it is recommended for the listener to respond to it. This is the view of Imam Maalik based upon the narration of Omar bin Al-Khattab.

As for Imam Shaf'ee and Imam Ahmed, they took the view that it should be repeated except when he says, 'Qad Qaamatis Salah', then the listener should say, 'Aqamaha Allahu wa Adaa maha waja alani minas saalihi ahlihaa'
(Allah has established it and made it continous and make me amongst its pious people) [Abu Daud, made weak by Imam Al-Baani]

They also based upon the narration of Abi umaamah who narrated from other companions that when Bilal made the Iqamah and reached 'Qad Qaamatis salah' the Prophet of Allah said, "Aqamaha Allahu wa Adaa maha".

Imam Maalik responded to this tradition as being extremely weak as it has Muhammed bin thaabit in its chain who is considered as weak and similar to Shahr bin Hushab. Imam Nawawee and Al-Bayhaqi, Ibn Hajr and sheikh Al-Baani all considered it as weak.

As for the addition "waja alani minas saalihi ahlihaa"..this is not reported in abu Dawud nor it is collected in the major books of hadith as mentioned by Sh Al-Baani.

Hence, the summary is that it is recommended to repeat the exact words of Iqamah without adding anything else to it.
