Question: How should one respond to the adhan? Answer: The scholars have divided in this issue of how should a listener respond to the adhan. The majority of scholars have adopted the view that it should be responded how it is heard except for 'come to the prayer (haya ala salah) and come to the success (haya alal falah) - in these two statements he should respond by saying 'La hawla wala quwata illa billah'. They base this view using the hadith of Umar bin Al-Khattab who said, the messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: "When the muadhin says; Allahu Akbar Allahu Akbar - then one of you should say Allahu akbar Allahu Akbar then when he says; Ash-hadu an laa ilaha illAllah - then say Ash-hadu an laa ilaha illAllah then when he says; Ash-hadu anna muhammed rasulullah, say Ash-hadu anna muhammed rasulullah then when he says; hayya alal salah - say, laa hawla wala quwata ill billah then when he saysl hayya alal falah - say laa hawla wala quwata ill billah then he says; Allahu Akbar Allahu Akbar - say, Allahu Akbar Allahu Akbar then he says; Laa ilaha illAllah - say Laa ilaha illAllah (whosoever says this) from this heart will enter Paradise" [Reported by Muslim] However, Imam Maalik took the view that there is no distinction between the wordings and they should all be the same based upon the narration of Abu Sa'eed al-Khudri, "If one of you hears the adhan then respond back to it how the muadhin says it" [Bukhari] so, from the above we can see that hadith of Omar is specific, whereas the hadith of Abu sa'eed is general and as there is a known principal 'general is based upon specific'. Thus, the most correct stance is the position of majority of scholars that one should repeat the adhan except for those two lines. |
