Can Zakat money be spent on the construction of a mosque? Print E-mail
Question:
Can Zakat money be spent on the construction of a mosque?

Answer:
Most scholars are in the opinion that Zakat money cannot be spent on the construction of a mosque or its maintenance. Among the eight categories of Zakat, as mentioned in Surah Al-Tauba, is the one known as 'Fi Sabil Allah' (in the way of Allah). This term normally means 'jihad'. It also includes Hajj expenses for a poor person as well. Some Hanafi jurists have also included, under this term, works for a common welfare (i.e. building bridges, paving roads, and digging wells). But they did not include the mosques.
