Which items of jewellery are women liable to pay Zakat? Print E-mail
Question:
Men have jewellery like diamond buttons, rings, costly watches and silver utensils. Women have jewellery made of silver, gold platinum, diamonds, pearls and other semiprecious jewels. Are men liable to pay Zakat on the above mentioned? Which items of jewellery are women liable to pay Zakat? If women are gifted jewellery by their husbands and they do not have the funds to pay Zakat, in what way can they pay this?

Answer:
Jewellery made of silver or gold is liable for Zakat. Zakat should be calculated at its market value. The owner of the jewellery could pay Zakat from other cash savings if any or get assistance from their spouses if they are willing to do so. If that is not possible, the Zakat sum remains as a debt payable by them in the future. This is up to them, how they manage to pay Zakat, either selling part of the jewellery or by taking a loan from someone.
